Hi! I’m Char, the creative owl brain behind Owl Spun. I’m originally from Vancouver, Canada, and currently live in the Seattle, WA area.
My previous site/name was Awkward Soul Designs. I’ve rebranded as I felt I was more “Owl” than “Awkward”. I design crochet and knitting patterns, spin yarn, and have Angora Rabbits. Besides yarn crafts, I am a tea writer at Oolong Owl.

Crochet Designer
I’ve been crocheting since 2002 – I taught myself how to crochet from a booklet, and my first project was a dishcloth. My main draw for learning crocheting was to make Amigurumi Stuff Dolls, and all that was available were pattern books in Japanese. In 2008, I started developing my own Amigurumi crochet patterns. I try to keep my dolls simple but also shaped well and do as little sewing on pieces as possible. For my crochet wearable designs, I like highly customizable patterns, simple but there is always a challenging quirk to keep it interesting.
Knitting Designer
I started knitting a few months after I learned to crochet, in 2002. For many years, knitting was the craft I did for myself. In contrast to crochet, I love to knit complicated and technical things, like lace, brioche, cables, and stranded fair isle. In Owl Spun knitting designs I push to easily let the crafter be able to modify by keeping the shaping simple, but the stitch pattern is engaging to knit. After much procrastination and sitting on many knitting designs, I published my first knitting pattern in 2023.
Yarn Maker
After years of looking for a teacher, I learned to spin in June 2019. Spinning connected with me immediately and I enjoy it immensely. My favorite fibers to spin are Shetland, Romney, and anything with silk. With obsessive practice, I became a production spinner and instructor.
